Lessings publication of Hermann Samuel Reimarus’s “Fragments of an Unnamed Author,” a radical critique of the Bible and Biblical religion, sparked the most consequential theological debate in 18th-century Germany. His focus will be on Lessing’s own position in the controversy and especially on his defense of Christianity against the Enlightenment’s attack.
