In 2024 we celebrate the 360th anniversary of the battle of Szentgotthárd and the Vasvár peace treaty which ended a bloody war in Central and Eastern Europe. These events profoundly marked the history of European international relations. After the peace of Vasvár, the Ottoman Empire reached its greatest extent in Central Europe. In this round table, French, Hungarian and Turkish historians speak on the relations between the great European powers, especially in Central Europe and try to answer to the following questions. What are the characteristic features of the 1664 campaign in Hungary? Who are the main military and political actors? What was the impact of the war locally and what was its image internationally? What are the main sources? Why was Vasvár’s peace considered as “shameful”?
