MCC Pécs students regularly engage in discussions with international lecturers who visit our Pécs Center as recognized experts in their respective fields. This week, our guest was Joanna Williams, founder and director of the think tank Cieo.
According to the former director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, modern feminism tends to focus more on victimhood than on celebrating women's achievements.
“I find it unfortunate that contemporary feminism overlooks the topics of motherhood and family life. In my view, the liberal discourse surrounding gender identity can lead to misunderstandings about women’s spaces and rights,” said Joanna Williams.
The expert, who has authored several books on the subject, also expressed concern, stating: “Anti-family views are spreading within feminism. These contribute to social issues and to the misinterpretation of gender roles. A kind of politics is emerging that sees the family as a problematic and obstructive structure.”
While Joanna Williams acknowledges the historical positive impact of feminism, she sees the current ideological approach as problematic. She emphasized that the family should be regarded as a key pillar and resource for societal stability, rather than as an obstacle to women's autonomy.
“There can and should be a balance between family life and professional ambition, in which the roles and mutual support of both partners are essential. I encourage young people to seek out supportive communities whose values can help them find their place in the world,” Joanna Williams concluded.
