BIO
John R. Selby (Jack) is a technology, finance, and independent film entrepreneur. He currently serves as Managing Director at Thiel Capital, the Los Angeles-based family office of Peter Thiel, and is also the Founder and Managing Partner of AZ-VC, the largest venture capital firm in Arizona. A member of the original “PayPal Mafia,” Jack co-founded Clarium Capital Management, a macro hedge fund, with Peter Thiel following the sale of PayPal to eBay in October 2002. He was one of PayPal’s original employees and later served as a Corporate Officer and Senior Vice President, overseeing the company’s international and corporate operations.
As an active technology investor and advisor, Jack has been involved with numerous prominent companies, including SpaceX, Palantir, Affirm, Myeloid Therapeutics, Kisbee Therapeutics, Resonance Medicine, and Paradox, among others. In addition to his work in tech and finance, Jack is also an independent film producer, with credits including Windfall, Silk Road, Freeheld, Bernie, and Act of Valor, as well as documentaries such as Fastball, Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, and On the Line: The Richard Williams Story.
Jack holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Hamilton College, where he currently serves as a Charter Trustee and a member of the Investment Committee for the college’s endowment. He is also an Ambassador to the Navy SEALs Foundation, a member of the Advisory Council to the Dubai Chamber of Digital Economy, and sits on the Board of Directors at the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority (AZSTA), the Arizona Commerce Authority (ACA), and the Grand Teton Music Festival, among other nonprofit commitments.
