Political Islam is an umbrella term for ideologies that use religion to transform society, culture, and ultimately the political establishment. Groups promoting such worldviews have emerged in Europe in recent decades as a result of migration and have long operated undisturbed.
In the wake of integration failures and the emergence of terrorism, governments and authorities in many countries are now confronting these organizations, which pose a threat to democratic structures and European values. Can they succeed? What threat does Europe face? The Dokumentationsstelle Politischer Islam (DPI), founded by the Austrian government, has been monitoring the activities of various Islamist organizations in Austria and Western Europe since 2016. In this roundtable, DPI Director Lisa Fellhofer, Migration Research Institute Director Viktor Marsai, and Research Director Sayfo Omar will discuss the topic.
