On the January KP Saturday, "What does AI give us?", High School Program students in Debrecen learned about the possibilities and limitations of using artificial intelligence. During the day, the students were introduced to the basics of AI, its applications, but also ethics issues were raised.
Dr. Viola Kerekes, the coordinator of the Pentezug Project, guided the audience through the exciting world of the Hortobágy Wild Horse Reserve, showing how they have tried to involve artificial intelligence in monitoring the population. The lesson from the research is that, it is more work to train AI than to reap the benefits, so they are thinking of new innovations - the speaker also involved the KP in the brainstorming, who gave the researcher interesting new ideas.
During the afternoon workshops, students could choose to delve deeper into AI technology or explore its social impact. During the hands-on sessions, participants were able to try out how AI can support learning in schools, but also to ask whether AI can really replace human creativity and thinking. The ethics workshop addressed the complex issues of algorithmic decision-making and human responsibility.
By the end of the day, students had a complex picture of the impact of AI on our world and the opportunities and challenges it presents for the future. The event highlighted that AI alone is not the answer to anything, but that its appropriate use can make many tasks much easier.
