In late September, MCC’s Center Membership Program and Junior Researcher Program held an introductory camp in Szeged, bringing together students to build connections, strengthen their research skills, and prepare for the academic year ahead. The camp focused on academic integrity, research credibility, and the role of science in society. Through discussions and expert insights, students explored how researchers can uphold high professional standards, earn public trust, and ensure their work contributes to a deeper understanding of contemporary challenges.
The first day featured a panel discussion on the challenges facing early-career researchers. Gellért Kréz, Péter Nemere, and Richárd Schneider shared their experiences of pursuing a career in research, navigating professional decisions, and establishing themselves in academia.
The second day began with Prof. Dr. István Stumpf, who explored the relationship between research, leadership, and social responsibility, including how scientific findings can inform decision-making. A subsequent panel discussion featuring Dr. Gábor Csepregi and Dr. Zalán Klauda focused on research team management, the changing nature of academic careers, and the importance of research autonomy.
Students also worked in teams to examine complex scientific and social challenges from multiple perspectives. They developed research questions, weighed competing arguments, and formulated evidence-based conclusions or innovative proposals. On the final day, each team presented its work and participated in a discussion of its findings.
Roland Tardi, Head of MCC's Academia, introduced the 2026/27 programs and outlined the expectations for participants in the Center Membership Program and Junior Researcher Program. He also provided practical guidance on academic life, covering scholarly publications, academic career paths, and key milestones in research.
Alongside the academic program, group activities, games, and informal conversations gave students from across Hungary the opportunity to get to know each other and build personal and professional connections.
The camp provided more than an opportunity to prepare for the academic year ahead. It encouraged students to develop intellectual independence, and openness to debate needed to address complex questions and better understand the role of science in society. It also highlighted the importance of curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to question established assumptions and learn from different perspectives in advancing scientific knowledge.
