The latest Ambassador Talk hosted by MCC Győr welcomed Her Excellency Penny D. Herasati, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Hungary, for an insightful discussion on Indonesia's global significance, the country's development challenges, and the strengthening relationship between Indonesia and Hungary.
The event began with two short videos introducing participants to Indonesia. While one offered a glimpse into the vibrant life of Jakarta, the other showcased the natural beauty and cultural richness of Bali through the eyes of a Hungarian traveler. Ambassador Herasati emphasized that although Indonesia remains relatively unfamiliar to many Europeans, it is the world's fifth most populous country and a strategically important player along major global trade routes.
Reflecting on her experiences in Hungary, the Ambassador spoke about cultural differences, mutual perceptions, and the growing connections between the two nations. She highlighted key challenges facing Indonesia today, including Jakarta's gradual sinking and the ambitious development of the country's new capital city.
The lecture also explored Indonesia's thriving tourism sector, particularly Bali's increasing popularity among digital nomads and international visitors. Ambassador Herasati noted that relations between Hungary and Indonesia have strengthened significantly in recent years, creating new opportunities for cooperation in areas such as pharmaceutical research, water management, and digitalization.
A significant part of the discussion focused on the challenges of governing and connecting a nation of more than 17,000 islands. Infrastructure development, including the modernization of roads, ports, and airports, remains a strategic priority as Indonesia seeks to improve connectivity and support long-term economic growth.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, giving students the opportunity to engage directly with the Ambassador on topics ranging from diplomacy and international cooperation to everyday life in Indonesia.
