In 1947, at the beginning of the descent of the Iron Curtain in Europe, American writer John Steinbeck and Robert Capa, a famous war photographer, embarked on a six-week trip to Stalin’s Russia. A year later, they published their book, A Russian Journal, which paints a sympathetic portrait of ordinary Soviet people and slightly mocks anti-Kremlin sentiments in the West.

Seventy years later, Julius Strauss, a former Moscow correspondent, and Thomas Dworzak, president of Magnum Photos, decided to follow this same path. Their plan was to get to know modern Russia and the two dominant Soviet successor states, Ukraine and Georgia.

Strauss and Dworzak gave a presentation to students at the MCC Media School on November 23 in which they presented their joint project.
